Social distancing has placed space between who and what we know. By forcing separation, we’ve inevitably stepped back, moving closer towards something else, something less familiar. Pairings are a series of confused duets; a coupling of interactive ‘unlikelies’ that have found new forms of closeness within forced distances, interfaces, slowdowns, cameras, and shutdowns.

The World Federation of Sphere Detection Sports

The World Federation of Sphere Detection Sports is a competitive game simulator that combines all ball sports to form one new, bigger, and better sport. Generated using a computer vision circle detection model, virtual players appear, performing their prescribed ball-behaviors: kick, catch, swing, hit, chase. Watch this July when The World Federation of Sphere Detection Sports launches its first season with a 24/7 live stream (live feed from Prisma, a 24/7 grocery store conveyor belt located in Finland). Who is playing who? Who will win? Who purchased the melon? No one knows!

The House of Desktop Dining

The House of Desktop Dining is a digital restaurant to visit and eat with your computer. Automatically generating a table for two, the restaurant uses select visual and audio data from the top mukbang performers to prepare a set of personalized food pairings with your body’s posture and mouth sounds.

The Live Spin Cycle Sessions 

A set of live performances by the virtual group Spin Cycle (not to be confused with Flying Lotus’ album of the same name). Spin Cycle are musicians, composers, singers, songwriters, dancers, record executives, algorithms, content creators, and a washer and dryer unit. Labeled as an experimental group with influences from the top love song and breakup song artists, the group has amassed a cult following since their formation. Their break up song - workout video - folding laundry tutorial - future political candidate speech "Cold Wash" quickly became an underground hit. Formed last week in a shared laundry room basement, Spin Cycle is currently producing content in Los Angeles where they perform on a weekly basis. Spin Cycle’s content is characterized by its unease, depicting desire, fantasy, and loneliness, while often critiquing the social media data economy that has spawned vicious content production cycles and algorithmically produced virtual influencers.

AR-TV is a streaming publication of design research that explores how the stories we consume today are authored by not just humans but algorithmically tuned cameras.

As a part of SNAP INC Research’s 2020 CREATIVE CHALLENGE, in collaboration with BBC Research and MICROSOFT Research, ARTCENTER’S Immersion Lab examined the future of storytelling with augmented reality through the lens of the camera, computer vision, and machine learning.

AR-TV proposes ways to identify, author, and share new stories in collaboration with autonomous machines. If a story is a series of events that are suddenly given priority, importance, and structure, who or what decides this? How can computer vision reveal events and details that once went unnoticed? How can machine vision and learning models detect features, infer patterns, and predict scenes, now be co-authors? How might these new machine envisioned stories change how we understand and relate to one another?

How can we use AR to idenitify individual animals and craft their own stories?

REBUILT HIERARCHY is a future mobile AR application that uses computer vision to identify individual animals from their physical attributes, creating a social network for humans and animals. The AR app aims to have people become more personally attached and respectful of animals by becoming more aware of their individualities, habitats, and shared stories. 


How can we use AR and object recognition to author more interactive live streaming content? How can the machine lead the human towards an more unexpected story?

MULTIVERSE AGENT is a custom 3D avatar and autonomous agent that helps people determine which path to take by exploring multiple experiences simultaneously. The avatar learns from personalized datasets and acts as a mirror, revealing ways to better understand ourselves. Watch your avatar experiences through real-time AR and snap stories.
